Test-Lab For SME-Products Nearly Ready
Published: Thursday, 11 March 2010

Thursday 11 Mac 2010, Bandar Seri Begawan   A test-lab will soon be made available by the government for local SMEs to conduct tests on their products such as 'packaging safety test', the Bulletin learnt recently. The move is expected to boost the export potential of locally-made products.

The laboratory will also offer calibration services for tools and equipment used by SMEs as well as government agencies to help cut costs. Calibration done locally will cost much less than sending the items overseas for testing. Calibration is needed for tools and equipment to ensure the production machinery and equipment are reliable and accurate.

The Bulletin learnt that with these kinds of services in place, it will also make it easier for the SMEs to run tests on their products before entering the marketplace, without establishing their own lab, which is again an expensive alternative.

The lab, which is part of the National Accreditation Centre in Kg Sinaut, has been completed and is awaiting equipment before it comes into operation.

Technical barriers to trade such as the various standard compliances are making it necessary for local products to meet the requirements before the products enter the marketplace, the Bulletin was told, especially if the products are destined for export. ~ Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
